Which Seoul Transportation Card Should You Buy? Tmoney, EZL, and Climate Card Compared
For most first-time visitors to Seoul, one Tmoney Card is enough.
However, a short-term Climate Card may cost less if you are staying only in Seoul and plan to use the subway and buses frequently. If you already have an EZL Card or a WOWPASS with transportation functionality, you may not need another card.
The simplest way to choose is:
Visiting Seoul and other Korean cities: Tmoney Card or EZL Card
Staying in Seoul and using public transit frequently: short-term Climate Card
Taking the subway only once: single-use ticket
Do not assume that an overseas contactless bank card, Apple Pay, or Google Wallet will work at every Korean subway gate or on every bus. A physical Korean transportation card remains the safer option.

This guide is useful for travelers who:
- are visiting Korea for the first time
- are traveling from Incheon or Gimpo Airport by public transportation
- plan to use Seoul’s subway and buses several times
- will visit Busan or another Korean city after Seoul
- are traveling with children or parents
You may not need an unlimited transit pass if you will use taxis between the airport, hotel, and attractions or join tours with transportation included.
Which transportation card should you choose?
The main Korean card names are written below in Korean, romanization, and English.
- 티머니 / Timeoni / Tmoney Card
- 이즐 / Ijeul / EZL Card
- 기후동행카드 / Gihu Donghaeng Kadeu / Climate Card
- 일회용 승차권 / Ilhoeyong seungchagwon / Single-use ticket

Tmoney and EZL have similar uses. If you already have an EZL Card or find one first, there is usually no reason to buy a separate Tmoney Card.
WOWPASS combines payment, currency exchange, and transportation functions. If you plan to use it, check its transportation feature before buying another card.
When is a short-term Climate Card worth it?
The prices for 기후동행카드 / Gihu Donghaeng Kadeu / Climate Card short-term passes are:

The physical card costs an additional KRW 3,000, about USD 2.20.
Using Seoul’s adult subway base fare of KRW 1,550, a simple comparison gives the following rough thresholds:
- 1-day pass: about four rides in one day
- 2-day pass: about six rides over two days
- 3-day pass: about seven rides over three days
This is only a rough guide. Transfers do not always count as separate full fares, and distance surcharges may apply.
If you only travel from your hotel to one area and return once a day, Tmoney is usually simpler. A Climate Card becomes more useful when you visit several neighborhoods, return to your hotel during the day, or make multiple subway and bus trips.
A short-term pass starts on the day you load it. It cannot be loaded in advance.
What should you buy at Incheon or Gimpo Airport?
인천국제공항 / Incheon Gukje Gonghang / Incheon International Airport
Tmoney or EZL is the safer option when traveling from Incheon Airport to Seoul.
You cannot board the Airport Railroad from Incheon Airport using a Climate Card. If you plan to take the all-stop Airport Railroad train or a local bus after arrival, prepare a Tmoney or EZL Card.
The AREX Express Train uses a separate ticket and is not boarded by simply tapping a standard transportation card.
김포국제공항 / Gimpo Gukje Gonghang / Gimpo International Airport
If you are staying only in Seoul and expect to use public transportation frequently, you can compare Tmoney with a short-term Climate Card.
Under the current coverage, the Climate Card can be used on the Airport Railroad between 김포공항역 / Gimpo Gonghang-yeok / Gimpo Airport Station and 서울역 / Seoul-yeok / Seoul Station.
If you will travel to 부산 / Busan / Busan or another city after Seoul, Tmoney or EZL is usually more practical because it can also be used on local public transportation outside Seoul.
How much should you load first?
These amounts are starting-balance estimates, not fixed transportation budgets.

You may need more if you use the all-stop Airport Railroad from Incheon Airport or travel outside Seoul.
Adding more credit later is usually easier than loading too much and requesting a refund before departure.
How do you top up a transportation card?
Tmoney and EZL can be topped up at convenience stores and subway station machines.
Physical transportation card top-ups often require Korean won in cash. Do not arrive with only a contactless overseas card or mobile wallet; keep a small amount of Korean cash for transportation.
Since March 2026, new ticket machines at Seoul Subway Lines 1–8 have accepted overseas-issued cards for short-term Climate Cards and single-use tickets. A separate service charge may apply to overseas-card payments.
Important rules when using the card
- Each traveler needs a separate transportation card.
- Tap when boarding and leaving a bus.
- Tap when exiting before transferring to another bus or subway line.
- Children and teenagers may need to register their date of birth at a convenience store to receive discounted fares.
- KTX trains and intercity or express buses require separate tickets.
- If the card does not register, ask a staff member instead of tapping it repeatedly.
How do you refund the remaining balance?
Tmoney refunds depend on the balance and refund location. Small balances can generally be refunded at participating convenience stores, while larger amounts may require a designated Tmoney service location.
The purchase price of the card is not refunded, and a service fee may apply.
A working EZL Card with a balance below KRW 20,000 can be refunded at participating convenience stores or ATMs. As of the information check date, the refund fee for amounts up to KRW 20,000 is KRW 500.
A Climate Card refund must be requested during its validity period. Travelers without a Korean bank account may need to visit Tmoney headquarters for a cash refund, making it inconvenient for a short visit.
The easiest option is to add only the amount you are likely to use.
