Seoul city center and Namsan Seoul Tower for comparing Myeongdong, Hongdae, Seongsu, and Gangnam

Where to Stay in Seoul for the First Time: Myeongdong, Hongdae, Seongsu, or Gangnam?

Before comparing hotel prices, decide which part of Seoul works best for your trip.

Myeongdong, Hongdae, Seongsu, and Gangnam are all popular places to stay, but they offer very different airport connections, sightseeing routes, shopping options, and nighttime atmospheres.

If you are arriving after a long international flight, choosing the wrong area can mean dragging your luggage through several subway transfers or spending more time commuting than expected.

Here is the short answer:

  • Stay in Myeongdong for a balanced first trip with palaces, markets, and shopping.
  • Stay in Hongdae for easy airport access, nightlife, cafés, and a younger atmosphere.
  • Stay in Seongsu for fashion, pop-up stores, cafés, and current Seoul trends.
  • Stay in Gangnam for business, beauty clinics, upscale shopping, and COEX.

Check Your Actual Route, Not Just the District Name

Booking sites often use a well-known neighborhood name for a much larger area.

A hotel described as being in Myeongdong may actually be closer to Euljiro 1-ga, Chungmuro, or Hoehyeon Station. A hotel listed under Gangnam may be near Gangnam Station, Sinsa, or Samseong, which can create very different travel times.

Before booking, save your main destinations on a map and check:

  • The actual nearest subway station and exit
  • Walking time from the station to the hotel
  • Airport transportation options
  • The final walking route at night
  • Hills, stairs, or pedestrian overpasses
  • Luggage storage before check-in and after check-out

1. Stay in Myeongdong for a Classic First Trip

명동
Myeongdong
Myeongdong

Myeongdong is one of the easiest areas to understand if this is your first visit to Seoul.

It provides convenient access to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwanghwamun, Namdaemun Market, Namsan Seoul Tower, Jongno, Insadong, and Dongdaemun. Shopping, currency exchange, restaurants, and tourist services are also concentrated in a relatively compact area.

English assistance is generally easier to find here than in residential neighborhoods. Major Seoul tourist information centers, including the one in Myeongdong, provide assistance in English. Check the current hours and available languages on the official Visit Seoul tourist information center page.

Myeongdong Is a Good Choice If You:

  • Are visiting Seoul for the first time
  • Want to see palaces, traditional neighborhoods, and markets
  • Plan to shop in Myeongdong or Namdaemun
  • Are traveling with parents or children
  • Prefer a central base for daytime sightseeing
  • Want an area where tourist services are easy to find

What Are the Disadvantages of Myeongdong?

Myeongdong is a busy commercial and tourist district. It does not feel like a quiet residential neighborhood, and rooms can be smaller than expected for the price.

A hotel with “Myeongdong” in its name is not necessarily close to Myeongdong Station. Always check the address and actual nearest station.

Use these names when searching on a Korean map app:

  • 명동역 / Myeongdong-yeok / Myeongdong Station
  • 을지로입구역 / Euljiro-ipgu-yeok / Euljiro 1-ga Station
  • 충무로역 / Chungmuro-yeok / Chungmuro Station
  • 회현역 / Hoehyeon-yeok / Hoehyeon Station
  • 명동 관광정보센터 / Myeongdong Gwangwang Jeongbo Senteo / Myeongdong Tourist Information Center

A hotel near Euljiro 1-ga Station can be convenient for Jongno and Gwanghwamun. Hoehyeon is useful for Namdaemun Market, while Chungmuro provides access to both Seoul Subway Lines 3 and 4.

Getting from Incheon Airport to Myeongdong

인천국제공항
Incheon Gukje Gonghang
Incheon International Airport

If you have large luggage, an airport limousine bus that stops close to your hotel may be easier than transferring between trains.

Airport Limousine Bus 6015 serves Myeongdong Station and several stops around Chungmuro and Dongdaemun. Check the current stops and timetable on the official Airport Limousine 6015 route page.

If you take the AREX train, you will need to transfer at Seoul Station or continue by taxi.

  • 서울역 / Seoul-yeok / Seoul Station
  • 명동역 / Myeongdong-yeok / Myeongdong Station

The best option depends on whether your hotel is closer to Myeongdong Station, Euljiro 1-ga Station, Chungmuro Station, or an airport bus stop.

2. Stay in Hongdae for Airport Access and Nightlife

홍대
Hongdae
Hongdae

Hongdae is a practical choice if you want easy airport access together with restaurants, cafés, shopping, nightlife, and live music.

The AREX All-Stop Train connects both Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport with Hongik University Station without a transfer.

The AREX Express Train does not stop at Hongik University Station. It travels directly to Seoul Station, so make sure you choose the All-Stop Train if you are staying in Hongdae.

  • 공항철도 일반열차 / Gonghang Cheoldo Ilban Yeolcha / AREX All-Stop Train
  • 공항철도 직통열차 / Gonghang Cheoldo Jiktong Yeolcha / AREX Express Train
  • 홍대입구역 / Hongdae-ipgu-yeok / Hongik University Station

You can check the airport railroad routes and estimated journey times on the Korea Tourism Organization’s official airport transportation guide.

Hongdae Is a Good Choice If You:

  • Want direct AREX access from the airport
  • Are traveling alone or with friends
  • Plan to eat and shop late at night
  • Enjoy K-pop, fashion, cafés, and live music
  • Want to visit Yeonnam-dong or Hapjeong
  • Want an easy airport journey on your arrival or departure day

What Are the Disadvantages of Hongdae?

Hongdae is much larger than it may appear on a tourist map. A hotel located in Mapo-gu is not automatically within easy walking distance of Hongik University Station.

Noise can also be a problem near club streets and late-night bars, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you want to enjoy Hongdae but still sleep well, look for accommodation one or two blocks away from the busiest nightlife streets.

Check:

  • Which Hongik University Station exit is closest
  • Actual walking time to the AREX platforms
  • Recent reviews about nighttime noise
  • Whether the front desk is open for late arrivals
  • Whether luggage storage is available

Use these names when searching on a Korean map app:

  • 홍대입구역 / Hongdae-ipgu-yeok / Hongik University Station
  • 연남동 / Yeonnam-dong / Yeonnam-dong
  • 홍대 걷고싶은거리 / Hongdae Geotgo Sipeun Geori / Hongdae Walking Street
  • 합정역 / Hapjeong-yeok / Hapjeong Station

If you are traveling alone or returning late at night, check the final walking route from the station to the hotel rather than judging the location only by daytime photos.

Hongdae offers direct AREX access and a lively atmosphere that continues late into the evening.

3. Stay in Seongsu for Cafés and Current Seoul Trends

성수
Seongsu
Seongsu

Seongsu is a strong choice for travelers interested in cafés, fashion, design stores, pop-up events, and contemporary Seoul culture.

You can combine the Seongsu café district with Seoul Forest and spend much of the day exploring new brands and converted industrial spaces.

However, if this is your first visit and your priorities are Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon, Insadong, Myeongdong, and Namdaemun Market, Seongsu may work better as a half-day destination than as your hotel base.

Seongsu Is a Good Choice If You:

  • Are mainly interested in cafés and pop-up stores
  • Follow Korean fashion, design, and lifestyle brands
  • Have already visited Seoul’s classic attractions
  • Want to spend time around Seoul Forest
  • Prefer modern neighborhoods to historic sightseeing areas

What Are the Disadvantages of Seongsu?

Seongsu is less convenient for airport transportation and the historic center than Myeongdong or Hongdae.

You will normally need transfers when traveling from Incheon Airport. Trips to Myeongdong, Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, and Insadong can also take longer.

Seongsu Station and Seoul Forest Station are on different subway lines.

  • 성수역: 지하철 2호선
    Seongsu-yeok: Jihacheol i-hoseon
Seongsu Station: Seoul Subway Line 2
  • 서울숲역: 수인분당선
    Seoul-sup-yeok: Suin-Bundangseon
    Seoul Forest Station: Suin–Bundang Line

The route from your hotel will depend on which station is actually closer. Do not choose a hotel based only on the word “Seongsu” in the listing.

Use these names when searching on a Korean map app:

  • 성수역 / Seongsu-yeok / Seongsu Station
  • 서울숲역 / Seoul-sup-yeok / Seoul Forest Station
  • 성수동 카페거리 / Seongsu-dong Kape Geori / Seongsu-dong Café Street
  • 서울숲 / Seoul-sup / Seoul Forest

Pop-up store schedules in Seongsu can change frequently, and some events require advance reservations. Save several places rather than choosing your hotel for a single store or event.

Seongsu is popular for cafés, fashion brands, design stores, and pop-up events.

4. Stay in Gangnam for Business, Beauty, and Upscale Shopping

강남
Gangnam
Gangnam

Gangnam is not one small neighborhood. It is a large area containing several business, shopping, medical, and entertainment districts.

A hotel listed as being in “Gangnam” may not be close to the clinic, office, shopping district, or event venue you plan to visit.

Check the exact station before booking.

  • 강남역: 음식점, 쇼핑, 직장인 상권
    Gangnam-yeok: Eumsikjeom, syoping, jikjangin sanggwon
Gangnam Station: Restaurants, shopping, and a busy office district
  • 신사역·가로수길: 카페, 패션, 피부과
    Sinsa-yeok·Garosu-gil: Kape, paesyeon, pibugwa
Sinsa Station and Garosu-gil: Cafés, fashion, and dermatology clinics
  • 압구정·청담: 고급 쇼핑, 미용, 엔터테인먼트 관련 장소
Apgujeong·Cheongdam: Gogeup syoping, miyong, enteoteinmeonteu gwallyeon jangso
Apgujeong and Cheongdam: Luxury shopping, beauty services, and entertainment-related locations
  • 삼성역·코엑스: 전시, 쇼핑, 비즈니스
    Samseong-yeok·Koekseu: Jeonsi, syoping, bijeoniseu
Samseong Station and COEX: Exhibitions, shopping, and business
  • 잠실역: 롯데월드, 대형 쇼핑몰, 스포츠 경기장
Jamsil-yeok: Lottewoldeu, daehyeong syopingmol, seupocheu gyeonggijang
Jamsil Station: Lotte World, large shopping malls, and sports venues

Gangnam Is a Good Choice If You:

  • Have business meetings in southern Seoul
  • Are attending an event or exhibition at COEX
  • Have an appointment at a dermatology or beauty clinic
  • Plan to shop in Apgujeong or Cheongdam
  • Want to focus on Gangnam and Jamsil
  • Prefer modern Seoul to traditional sightseeing areas

What Are the Disadvantages of Gangnam?

Traveling every day from Gangnam to Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, or Myeongdong can take more time than expected.

Do not book a hotel or clinic based only on the word “Gangnam.” Confirm the nearest subway station and exit.

Use these names when checking the location:

  • 강남역 / Gangnam-yeok / Gangnam Station
  • 신사역 / Sinsa-yeok / Sinsa Station
  • 압구정역 / Apgujeong-yeok / Apgujeong Station
  • 청담역 / Cheongdam-yeok / Cheongdam Station
  • 삼성역 / Samseong-yeok / Samseong Station
  • 잠실역 / Jamsil-yeok / Jamsil Station

If you are visiting a beauty clinic, staying in the same area can reduce the need for long subway journeys or multiple transfers after treatment.

Gangnam is convenient for business, beauty appointments, COEX, and upscale shopping.

How Should You Travel from the Airport?

From Incheon International Airport

The main choices are the AREX train, an airport limousine bus, and a taxi.

The AREX Express Train travels directly to Seoul Station. The All-Stop Train stops at Hongik University Station and several other stations before reaching Seoul Station.

Estimated travel times published by the Korea Tourism Organization are:

  • Incheon Airport Terminal 1 to Seoul Station by Express Train: about 43 minutes
  • Incheon Airport Terminal 2 to Seoul Station by Express Train: about 51 minutes
  • Terminal 1 to Seoul Station by All-Stop Train: about 59 minutes
  • Terminal 2 to Seoul Station by All-Stop Train: about 66 minutes

These times do not include immigration, baggage collection, waiting for the train, subway transfers, or walking to your hotel.

After a long flight, compare the entire journey to the hotel door, not just the advertised train time.

When taking an Airport Limousine bus from Incheon Airport to Seoul, purchase a ticket before boarding. At Terminal 2, passengers using routes including Bus 6015 have been required to buy a ticket from the counter or basement ticket machine since March 5, 2026. Check the official Terminal 2 ticket notice before traveling.

From Gimpo International Airport

김포국제공항
Gimpo Gukje Gonghang
Gimpo International Airport

The AREX All-Stop Train connects Gimpo International Airport directly with Hongik University Station.

Traveling from Gimpo Airport to Myeongdong, Seongsu, or Gangnam usually requires a subway transfer or taxi. If your flight arrives at Gimpo, do not rely on hotel directions written only for Incheon Airport.

If You Arrive Late at Night

Immigration and baggage collection can take longer than expected.

Before flying, check:

  • The last AREX train or airport bus
  • The hotel’s final check-in time
  • Whether reception is open 24 hours
  • Whether you must notify the hotel about a late arrival
  • The hotel’s Korean address and phone number
  • The estimated taxi fare shown in your Korean map or taxi app

How to Book a Seoul Hotel in English

You can compare Seoul hotels in English through sites such as:

  • Booking.com
  • Agoda
  • Expedia
  • Hotels.com
  • Trip.com

Do not book based only on the first price shown. Compare the final price for the same room, dates, occupancy, and cancellation conditions.

Essential Booking Checklist

  • Total price, including taxes and service fees
  • Payment currency and whether you pay now or at the hotel
  • Free-cancellation deadline
  • Actual nearest station and walking distance
  • Room size, bed configuration, and maximum occupancy
  • Private or shared bathroom
  • Luggage storage, elevator, and late check-in availability
  • International card acceptance

A free-cancellation deadline may be based on Korean local time. Check the exact date, time, and time zone.

Check the Bed Configuration Carefully

A “Double Room” usually contains one double bed, while a “Twin Room” generally contains two separate beds. However, bed sizes and room layouts vary by hotel.

If three people are traveling together, check:

  • The actual number of beds
  • Whether a sofa bed or rollaway bed is included
  • Extra-bed charges
  • Whether breakfast is included for the third guest
  • Whether the room officially allows three adults

A room listed for three guests may contain one double bed and a small sofa bed. Check both the room description and photos before booking.

Hotel Payments

Paying online before departure can make your travel budget easier to manage, but check the payment currency and your card issuer’s foreign transaction fees.

If you choose to pay at the property, confirm when payment will be collected and whether your card network is accepted.

Bring a physical credit card enabled for international use, a backup card, and a small amount of Korean won. Do not rely only on a phone wallet or contactless payment.

Prepare:

  • A physical credit card enabled for international use
  • A backup card from a different network or issuer
  • A card matching the booking name
  • A small amount of Korean won

If you use a debit card for a security deposit, part of your balance can remain unavailable until the authorization is released. The release time depends on the hotel and card issuer.

Do not rely only on a phone wallet or contactless payment. Carry a physical chip card and make sure you know its PIN.

Are Korean Motels Suitable for International Travelers?

모텔
Motel
Motel

Korean motels operate differently from motels in many English-speaking countries.

In Korea, some motels are inexpensive city accommodations or small business hotels. Others focus on short-time stays or adult customers. You therefore need to check the room type and property conditions before booking.

Two Korean terms are particularly important:

  • 숙박 / Sukbak / Overnight stay
  • 대실 / Daesil / Short-time room rental

Do not choose a motel based only on price. Check:

  • Whether the booking is “숙박” or “대실”
  • Check-in and check-out times
  • Front desk hours
  • Windows and ventilation
  • Non-smoking room availability
  • Elevator and luggage storage
  • Whether international guests are accepted
  • Recent traveler reviews

For a first trip or a family holiday, a standard hotel, serviced residence, hostel, or clearly described guesthouse may be easier to understand.

Which Area Fits Your Trip?

If This Is Your First Visit to Seoul

Myeongdong is the most straightforward choice. It offers convenient access to palaces, markets, shopping areas, and tourist services.

If You Are Traveling Alone

Choose Myeongdong for central sightseeing and a simple daytime itinerary. Choose Hongdae for airport access, cafés, restaurants, and a livelier evening atmosphere.

If You Are Traveling with Friends

Hongdae is convenient if you plan to stay out late. If sleep is important, avoid hotels directly beside club streets.

If Cafés and Fashion Are Your Priorities

Choose Seongsu, or stay in Myeongdong or Hongdae and visit Seongsu for half a day if your trip is short.

If You Have Business or Beauty Appointments

Choose Gangnam, but use the exact office, venue, or clinic location rather than the general district name.

If You Are Traveling with Parents or Children

Myeongdong can provide a simpler sightseeing route. Check room size, bathroom layout, elevators, and whether the nearest subway exit has stairs.

Which Map App Should You Use in Korea?

Install a Korean map app before departure and save your hotel’s Korean name and address.

NAVER Maps, Navigation

NAVER Maps provides Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese maps and supports English navigation. It is useful for checking subway exits, buses, and walking routes.

Before installing, verify both the app name and the developer, “NAVER Corp.”

After booking, save screenshots of:

  • The hotel’s Korean name
  • Korean address
  • Nearest subway station and exit
  • Hotel phone number
  • Check-in time
  • Booking number and voucher
  • Late-arrival instructions
  • Route from the airport to the hotel

Final Recommendation

Myeongdong is the safest all-around choice for a first Seoul trip, but it is not the best area for everyone.

  • Palaces, markets, and shopping: Myeongdong
  • Airport access and nightlife: Hongdae
  • Cafés and current trends: Seongsu
  • Business, beauty, and upscale shopping: Gangnam

For a short two- or three-night trip, staying in one hotel is usually more efficient than changing areas.

For a stay of four nights or longer, you can divide your trip between two areas, such as Myeongdong and Gangnam. Remember that changing hotels takes time for check-out, luggage transfer, and check-in.

Choose your hotel based on the places you will actually visit, the complete airport journey, and the route back at night—not simply the most famous or least expensive district.
